DIY Sensory Corner - Set Up a Calming Space at Home

Posted by Sarah Potts on

Looking for a simple way to help your child relax and self-regulate? Setting up a sensory corner at home is the perfect solution! Whether you have a large space or just a quiet nook, creating a sensory-friendly area at home can make a big difference in your child's emotional well-being.

Start by choosing a quiet area of the house that is cozy and not cluttered.

Add the essential items such as a Sensory Tent, Weighted Lap Blanket and Noise Reduction Headphones.

Another item that is perfect to add to a sensory corner is a weighted animal. Weighted animals focus on Deep Pressure Touch Stimulation, which is a firm tactile sensory input that provides a proprioceptive response to the body. They simulate firm hugs and compression and motivate the release of serotonin and dopamine in the brain. This helps children to regulate their emotions when going to sleep or when they are feeling emotionally overwhelmed.

A couple more sensory tools to consider while creating your sensory corner are Body Socks and a Sensory Projector Light. Both of these tools help children self-regulate and relax.

Lastly, add a quiet activity to keep your child occupied. Our Mindfulness Mat and Markers is perfect for this. This mat is erasable, reusable and specifically designed to help your child have quiet time, so they can regulate their emotions and calm their nervous system. It provides hours of fun and independent play as it's packed with mindfulness activity and colouring opportunities.

All of the sensory tools to create your DIY sensory corner can be found on our website!
