How To Choose The Right Sensory Tools For Your Needs

How To Choose The Right Sensory Tools For Your Needs

Posted by Sarah Potts on

With so many sensory tools out there, it can be tricky to know which one is right for you, your child, or your students. That's why we've put together a simple guide to help you choose tools that support calm, focus, and regulation.

Step 1: Identify the goal

Ask yourself: What do I want this tool to do?

  • Help calm emotions? Try weighted animals, calm down bottles, or aromatherapy oils.
  • Improve focus & attention? Fidget toys and chewable tools can help.
  • Encourage movement? Try gym balls, balance cushions, or scooter boards.

Step 2: Consider sensory preferences

Everyone experiences the world differently. Some people respond best to:

  • Tactile input: squishy, spiky, or stretchy textures
  • Visual input: glitter, lights, or movement
  • Proprioceptive input: pushing, pulling, squeezing, or heavy work

Step 3: Think about practicality

  • Where will the tool be used- home, classroom, therapy session?
  • Will it travel easily? Some tools are portable, others are better for stationary use.
  • Is it safe and age-appropriate? Always check labels and recommended ages.

Step 4: Start simple and build your toolkit

You don't need everything at once. Start with one or two tools and see how they work. You can always add more over time as needs change.
