Listed below are suggestions regarding the use of Puzzle Mats and how they may assist with fine motor development. The mats range from āeasyā to āchallengingā. Keep in mind they are for fun as well as learning.
CITY MAT: This mat is the most basic, it contains 9 large tiles and can be used in a square pattern, straight line or any other arrangement that works. The idea is for the roads to join, the mats can be rearranged to change the layout of the city. When finished it can be used to run small cars on to visit parts of the city.
SHAPES: A beginning mat for puzzle solving, lay the mat out on the floor with the shapes removed and have the child find the tile to match the shape.
NUMBERS: With this mat the degree of difficulty takes a step up from the shapes mat, as each tile has more pieces in the puzzle. The mat helps with learning numbers along with working on fine motor skills. Hand the tiles to the child, one at a time with the puzzle parts removed, then have the child assemble the tile. Continue until all tiles are assembled then have the child arrange the tiles in numerical order.
VEHICLES: The puzzles start to get more challenging, fine motor skills are being tested as a child assembles the tile. Using the same method as before, hand the disassembled tiles to the child, one at a time, to have them work out the puzzle.
VARIETY: The most challenging puzzle and one that will show how fine motor skills have developed. As before, use the dismantled tiles, one at a time, to have a child assemble them. For an even greater challenge for a child who easily masters the puzzle, hand over 2 dismantled tiles to increase the challenge.
Remember, have fun using the puzzles and observe how fine motor skills may have improved along with recognition of letters, numbers and shapes.
